A woman was injured as Illinois firefighters braved frigid conditions to during a fire that tore through a motel early Monday.
Crews responded just before 2 a.m. to a fire at the O'Hare Kitchenette Motel in Leyden Township, near Melrose Park, WBBM-TV reports. Up to 100 people were inside the motel when the fire broke out, and video from the scene captured flames collapsing the building's second floor.
One woman staying at the motel suffered minor burns when her hair caught fire, and other tenants came to her aid when they heard the crackling flames.
“Her hair was on fire, so my son put it out,” Ernestine Dinkins told WBBM.
The woman was taken to Loyola Hospital in Maywood, and she was in stable condition, WLS-TV reports. No other injuries were reported at the time.
Frigid temperatures, as well as icy and snowy conditions, created difficulties for firefighters, who experienced water issues at the scene. One tenant told WLS that her room didn't have a smoke alarm, and she found out about the fire when a firefighter banged on her door.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
